Coach Training – A Modular Approach

Katrine Geneau & Associates offers a unique five-module training program designed to introduce fundamental coaching concepts to leaders.  It enables managers to integrate a coaching philosophy into their leadership style and to take a “coach approach” to their relationships and activities.

The modular design is ideally suited for busy leaders who cannot be away from their desks for long periods of time.  It consists of 5 separate three-hour sessions.  The modules are presented every two to three weeks.  This spacing allows the learnings to be applied and practiced between sessions.

Overview

Carefully designed to include a context and a foundation for using specific coaching skills, this program combines strategies and techniques along with a model that supports participants in effectively learning how to use coaching tools and be coach-like.

Objectives

  • Participants will become conversant with a coaching model which they will be able to use on a daily basis
  • They will develop an understanding of the value of coaching as an essential leadership competency
  • They will discover their own ability to coach, and experience the satisfaction of developing leadership in others

Format

This 3 hour x 5 session program, honors the learning cycle (learn – practice – reflect -conclude – learn) and enables time for practice and application in between modules. It includes live coaching demos, small and large group discussions, experiential exercises, opportunities to practice and receive feedback, and initiates an ongoing buddy system to sustain the learning,

Content

This coach training program follows a clear model that participants can readily take back to the office and put to immediate use.  The program creates a Foundation by addressing the principles of effective coaching and how  leaders need to deal with their dual role as coach and manager.  It explores what coaching truly is, and the attitudes of successful coaches.

The Skills of coaching addresses the softer side of coaching and incorporates the tools of  powerful listening and responding at a deep level in order to build a solid bridge of communication between manager and direct report.  It teaches a process of inquiry that uncovers the beliefs and assumptions that govern people’s actions, and offers a method of providing feedback that champions rather than undermines the growth of a person.

The Steps deals with the specificity of the coaching conversation which follows a strategy that includes identifying, without limits, what the coachee wishes to accomplish; pinpointing current reality free of emotional attachments; exploring options and alternative strategies; developing an action plan congruent with the coachee’s inherent values and abilities; and establishing guidelines and structures to ensure accountability.

Participants

This program has been successfully delivered to a range of leaders from managers to senior executives.  While it is designed for those who have had little or no exposure to coaching or coaching skills, it is tailored to the level of the participants and can serve to deepen proficiency in those who have already had some training.  Ideally suited to a class size of 10-14.
